Zoie Marie (Irion) McClendon

Zoie Marie Irion McClendon passed away peacefully on May 14, 2024 in Yukon, Oklahoma at the age of 97. She was born in her grandparent's home in Carrier, Oklahoma on January 30, 1927. She grew up in Fairview, Oklahoma and later the family moved to Weatherford, Oklahoma where her father was Superintendent of Schools. While attending Southwestern State College in Weatherford, she met Robert Vern McClendon of Harmon County, Oklahoma. They were married in the home where she was born on January 19, 1947. After receiving their college degrees, they moved to Harmon County where they lived in three different rural homes and raised their family. Zoie taught piano and was active in the Home Demonstration Club and the Methodist church in both Gould and Hollis. Vern taught high school for a few years and later took over the family farming/ranching operations. They raised 3 sons and also had a fourth son who died as a young boy in 1963. In 1967 Vern passed away. Zoie moved back to Weatherford, Oklahoma in 1968 to attend college and obtain her teaching certificate and later obtain her Master's degrees in Education and Library Science. In 1969 she began a twenty-year career teaching junior high English in the Weatherford school system. She retired early due to hearing problems. While in Weatherford she was active in the Methodist Church and sang for several years in the church choir. In 2011 she moved to Carrollton, Texas to be closer to her son, Mike. In July 2022 she moved to the Spanish Cove Retirement Village in Yukon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenna Marie Mount Irion and Fredrick William Irion Jr., her husband, Vern, two sons: Merle Ray McClendon and Robert Mark McClendon, her brother Oren C. Irion and his wife, Emma Marie, a sister, Vesta O. Irion Felix and her husband Robert W. Felix, and one grandson, Christopher Sean McClendon.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law Sheryl Sue Reber McClendon of Yukon, Oklahoma, son Jon Michael McClendon and his wife Hannie Kovach McClendon of San Marcos, Texas, son Monte Lynn McClendon and his wife Judy Maedgen McClendon of Surprise, Arizona, Sister Joellen Irion Glenn and her husband John Glenn of Ft. Morgan, Colorado, and grandchildren, Chris, Shana, Matt (Heather), Sam (Cate), Jake, Kim, Nick, Sherry, Scott (Jessica); Great grandchildren, Trent, Cole, Zane, Savannah.
Zoie will be laid to rest in the McClendon family plot next to her husband, Vern, in Fairmount Cemetery in Hollis.
