Michael Hess, a veteran of the Iraq War, passed away on July 6, 2023. Michael was born on February 9, 1987 to Kent and Dina Hess and attended Lewisville High School before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. Early in his life, Michael excelled in football playing running back and linebacker, earning the nickname "The Tank" by coaches and teammates. After winning multiple city championships, his family was convinced he was destined to play in the NFL. Michael continued to play football through his junior year when an injury transitioned him from a player to a fan.
After Michael completed training at Lackland AFB, he served in the 86th Security Forces Squadron (The Wolfpack). While stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, Michael protected the military base and was deployed to Kuwait, aka "The Rock," during his time of service. Michael shared many incredible stories with family. Michael's time in Germany allowed his family the opportunity to visit new countries and experience a part of the world they had never seen. The U.S. Air Force recognized Michael with special medals and badges including: Meritorious Unit Award, Outstanding Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon.
Michael was a proud and loving father to his two sons, Preston and Conner. Some of the boys' favorite memories with their father include tennis lessons from Dad, golfing, swimming, visiting arcades and attending firework shows. He was a good son and a good brother.
Michael was so very caring and compassionate, but also witty and funny. He was forgiving, non-judgmental, and had a special ability to put himself in someone else's shoes to better understand how they might feel. He never met a stranger and was always there to help anyone who needed assistance. Michael was just beginning to get involved with the Veterans For Life program that helps veterans and first responders receive the assistance and care that best suits their needs.
Michael will be greatly missed by his parents and sons: Kent Hess, Dina Hess, Preston Hess (15) Conner Hess (12). Also, by his sister and her family: Nicole Reilly, Tim Reilly, Addison Reilly (16), Colton Reilly (15); along with his grandmother Ruth King and aunts, uncles, and cousins. Michael is preceded in death by his grandparents: Bud Hess, Carolyn Hess and Don King.
We will all remember Michael's kind heart and know he is now resting easy in Heaven.
In honor of Michael, we know he would very much appreciate donations to be made to the Veterans for Life USA at VeteransForLifeUSA.org or (913) 558-3933.
