Lisa Hermine Furry was born on September 5, 1957, in Gary, Indiana. She was called home to spend eternity with our perfect Lord and Savior on October 14, 2024, after an almost two-year battle with lung cancer. Lisa was diagnosed with lung cancer December of 2022 and fought this illness hard with strength and perseverance. She was determined not to lose her positive attitude and fight, even through the very last few hours until she finally gave into rest and peace knowing that God was calling her home, and that she didn't have to fight any more. She was a caring and selfless helper; though she was called home at the youthful age of 67 years old, God knew that she had given all she had of herself as a daughter, mother, grandmother, and nurse, and that it was time for her to rest.
Lisa was preceded in death by her mother, Hermine Anna Shuman, who also lost her battle to cancer. Young in her twenties, Lisa walked with and cared for her mother while she was sick. When Lisa was diagnosed, she knew how hard this road was going to be after walking that road first with her mother. Lisa and her mother had an incredibly special and close relationship, and this turned out to be one of the most difficult events in her life, setting the stage for the strength and courage she needed later in life. Lisa was also preceded in death by her father Alexander Shuman, and her baby grandson Lennon Michael Furry.
Lisa is survived by her close and beloved family: daughter Colleen Gray (Preston), son Neil Furry (Brittany), brother Tim Shuman (Shirley), niece Brandi Pold (Scott), and cherished grandchildren Gabriel, Daniel, and Kacie Gray.
She graduated from Crown Point High School and later a diploma program at Memorial Hospital of South Bend School of Nursing in 1978. Lisa later obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Indiana Wesleyan to complete her nursing education. She served as a very hard working, honest, and dedicated ICU and primarily emergency room registered nurse for approximately 33 years. Much of her nursing career was served as an emergency room nurse for Wishard Memorial, now Eskenazi Health, in Indianapolis. Her career choice as a child was to be a nurse, and she lived that career out with passion and love for the job. It showed in her gentleness for each patient under her care, no matter their situation or illness.
Whenever someone had a need, Lisa filled it, without question, sometimes to the detriment of herself and her own comfort or well-being. Her children and grandchildren were the top of her list, and always put them first, no matter what life events tried to get in the way. If there was an opportunity to cook a meal or look up a recipe, she took it! She had a love for animals, especially dogs. Lisa loved traveling and was able to travel to her favorite historical location, Egypt, along with the Grand Canyon and Williamsburg. She always wanted to travel to Alaska and Yellowstone; however, she never quite made it there as she planned those trips for retirement. Lisa loved shopping, watching old and historical movies, coffee, Chinese food, David Jeremiah and Charles Stanley sermons, old worship hymns, live music, and concerts, especially Jeremy Camp, Mercy Me, and Third Day. She loved the chance to sit, relax, and enjoy a meal with friends and family. She collected purses, shoes, and cooking magazines with recipes.
"But as for you, be strong and do not give up; for your work will be rewarded" from 2 Chronicles 15:7. Of all the verses from God's Holy word, this is the truest of her life. Lisa Furry was a fighter and of the strongest hearts, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. God knew she had fought her good fight; she finished the race; and she did hear "well done, good and faithful servant" as she joined Jesus Christ in Heaven to receive her eternal reward for all of the love and service she brought in this life to her family, friends, and patients.
