Harold Schuneman Obituary

Harold Morris (“Mike”) Schuneman, Jr. passed away February 3, 2021 at the age of 77, surrounded by those he loved. A private family viewing was held  February 8, 2021 at Ingram, Smith & Turner Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Yukon “Friends of the Park”.

Mike was born May 29, 1943 in Oklahoma City to Harold and Josephine Schuneman. He was raised in Oklahoma City and graduated from Capitol Hill High School. His favorite activities included the car club and playing pool for money, clothes, or just about anything his opponent didn’t mind losing.  Always the entrepreneur, he owned many auto-related businesses and never thought twice about taking his daughters on a repossession hunt or providing his engine repair shop for their after-school playground. His adventurous and playful parenting style included dragging home a menagerie of unusual pets and playing hide-and-seek with all the lights off, only to “win” by climbing out of a window. Motorcycle rides and regular trips to Braum’s were all part of the childhood he offered his girls.

Retirement never entered his mind, as Mike’s next chapter involved embarking on the food truck industry. “Grumpy’s” truck was a participant at festivals and events all over the state, but he always felt his home was with the Yukon parks system. For the past 16 years he was a fixture at the Yukon Christmas in the Park, with families including getting hot chocolate from Grumpy’s as part of their holiday tradition.

During this time he simultaneously was committed to spending time with granddaughter, Justice. Truly, his pride and joy. He was frequently in her classroom as “room grandpa”, always giving away popcorn, snow cones, and being present at each function.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Josephine Schuneman; brothers, Richard and Bruce Schuneman; and sisters, Mary Jo Berninger and Willie Ann Loyd. Survivors include his daughters, Jeana Jones Kucera and husband, Michael, of Yukon, and Kimberly Stieg and husband, Scott, of Oklahoma City; sister, Sally Haggard and husband, Steve, of Moore; 4 grandchildren, RJ, Savonah, Briggs, and Justice; 2 great grandchildren, Lily Ann and Danger; and many other relatives and friends.

A man who had the unique ability to insult and charm at the same time! Mike “Grumpy” Schuneman will be missed and remembered by many. A memorial service with park bench dedication will be held at a later date for family and friends.
