Betty Lou Jefferson passed away on March 25, 2025, in Bethany, OK at the age of 104.
Betty was born May 27, 1920 in Oklahoma City, OK where she was raised by her mother. She began working as a teenager and was among the first usherettes of the Tower Theater. It was here that she entered a beauty pageant talent show where she received 2nd place.
Betty married Alonzo James and from that union was blessed with her first two children Gwendolyn and Jimmy Lee. Throughout Betty's life, she was known for her loving compassion and told her family she loved them. Her family considered her an "FBI Agent" because of her ability to find out any information someone needed to know. Betty was a free spirit who loved to dance. For many years, she was a member of the Oklahoma City Swing Dance Club. She also had a special interest in music, especially Rat Pack and anything sang by Frank Sinatra.
Betty met Henry Chavez in 1948 and from that union was blessed with the three children that completed her family Henry Don, Delores Jean, and Michael Joseph. She was the mother who all of her kids friends loved. Betty was a wonderful housekeeper, and was happiest when her house was full of family for a gathering. Her favorite role was being Grandma and Gigi to her many grandchildren who she loved very much.
Betty had a strong work ethic throughout her life. She spent many years working in retail at Dillards, Orbachs at 50 Penn Place. When Western Electric came to Oklahoma City, Betty was one of the first employees hired. Because of her special love for children, Betty offered in home child care for many years as well.
Betty was beautiful from the inside out with a smile that lit up the room. She was a hugger with an infectious laugh. Betty was a woman who leaned into her faith and raised her children to do so as well. She will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
