Al Nita Johnston, 83, of Mustang, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday May 10th, 2022. Known most of her life by family and friends as Joyce, she was born in Yukon on September 15, 1938, to Martin Al and Monita Bell (Taylor) Johnston. She graduated high school in 1956 in Midwest City, where she met and later married her former husband, James W. Thompson. She worked briefly as a typist at Tinker Airforce Base, before giving birth to the first of their four children. Thereafter, Joyce was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing for her kids, canning vegetables from the garden, collecting quartz rocks, people watching, and sitting outside in the sunshine. She occasionally taught Children's Church and always sang in the choirs of the Assemblies of God churches she attended with her young family. Later in life she attended the First Baptist church in Tuttle with her daughter and son-in-law after moving from Tulsa to Mustang.
Joyce was preceded in death by her father Al Johnston, her sister Patty Edgecomb, and her brother Danny Mike Johnston, as well as by her mother Monita Wiebe. She is survived by her four children, 11 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren: daughter, Jamie, and her husband Paul McKay of Sammamish, WA; daughter, Linda, and her husband Everett Stacy of Tuttle; son, James and his wife Jane Thompson (currently on mission in Africa); and son, Mike and his wife Angie Thompson of Haskell. She is also survived by her sister, Linda Johnston of Norman. Joyce was loved by her many grandkids and great grandkids, who are too numerous to name.
A Celebration of Life dinner will be held by her family later in the year. She will be taken to Mt. Ida, Arkansas, so she can be close to her beloved daddy, sister, and brother. Joyce was a quiet person who kept a smile on her face and was happy - what a lovely legacy to leave behind for those of us who loved her so much. In lieu of flowers for the services, please consider planting a tree or flowering bush in mom's memory.
